South River Press is the imprint of J. I. Merritt, author of The Last Buffalo Hunt and Other Stories: Adventures in the Great American Outdoors, a collection of historical narratives, spanning three centuries, about Americans and the environment. Its subjects include: Daniel Boone; naturalist William Bartram; George Drouillard of the Lewis & Clark expedition; John Muir; geologist Clarence King; photographer William Henry Jackson; George A. Custer; Theodore Roosevelt; outdoor writers Frank Forester and Nessmuk; “white Indian” John Tanner; fish culturists Livingston Stone, Fred Mather, and Seth Green; Ishi, the last wild Indian; and taxidermist Carl Akeley.


(John I., “Jim”) Merritt was for many years
a contributing editor at Field & Stream. He is a former editor of We Proceeded On, the quarterly journal of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation (2000-06), and Princeton University’s alumni magazine (1989-99). He has written nearly two hundred magazine articles on fishing and the outdoors, the American West, natural history, science, and other subjects for a variety of publications. His other books include Goodbye, Liberty Belle: A Son’s Search for His Father’s War; Trout Dreams: A Gallery of Fly-Fishing Profiles; and Baronets & Buffalo: The British Sportsman in the American West. He has also compiled and edited three anthologies: The Best of Field & Stream: 100 Years of Great Writing from America’s Premier Sporting Magazine; The Derrydale Press Treasury of Fishing; and The Best of PAW: 100 Years of the Princeton Alumni Weekly. He and his wife, Nancy, live in Pennington, New Jersey. The name South River Press derives from the colonial-era name for the Delaware River, just a few miles from their home.
